Best Blues Singers From New Orleans
The “blues” music genre began in the South, having been borne from tough times, then traveled throughout U.S. states in the person of its musicians and singers, the king and queens of rhythm and blues, and is now around the world. New Orleans celebrates the best of this gospel styled, home grown music, in such artists as Aaron Neville.
Aaron Neville has received national and international recognition with his unique haunting sound, since 1977. He shares the New Orleans music style with his brothers, known as the Nevile Brothers.
Irma Thomas is presently known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” having had a great impact in rhythm and blues, for over fifty years.
Kevin Moore, better known as “Keb Mo,” the present day Louisiana blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Keb Mo is currently touring in blues clubs and has appeared in television shows and has written their theme songs, movies, and collaborated on many songs.
Marva Wright was a Louisiana blues singer who burst onto the rhythm and blues scene when she was almost forty years of age, in 1987, but whose reputation grew rapidly, both nationally and internationally.
Other great blues artists whose music can still be heard waffling out of the many famous clubs and restaurants throughout the streets of New Orleans. These artists include Fats Domino, who was born and raised in New Orleans. Antoine Dominique – “Fats,” is the worldwide emperior of the New Orleans rhythm and blues genre. He has received awards from the Rock’ n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, Louisianas’ Delta Music Hall of Fame and many more, with over one hundred million records sold.
Another impresario of the rhythm and blues music scene and who is currently touring the U.S., is Malcolm John rebennack, known as the great “Dr. John.” He has always performed around New Orleans, but his national popularity became known in the 1970′s and exploded around the world.
