Best 20th Century New Orleans Jazz Artists

The city of New Orleans has always been associated with jazz music. It all began back in the 1830′s when African slaves gathered together in Congo Square on Sundays to dance and play music. One of the members of white community named Louis Gottschalk participated in this local event. When brass bands arrived in the city in the late 1800′s many thought it would not be good. In 1885 there was a ban on musical expression at Congo Square, but it was so unpopular it was eventually lifted. Ragtime became popular back in the 1890′s and in New Orleans changes were well underway for a new type of music. By the early 1900′s musicians such as Ferdinand Joesph Lamothe also known as Jelly Roll Morton, Sydney Bechet and Louis Armstrong were considered pioneers in the Jazz movement. Other luminaries included Henry Red Allen and Joesph King Oliver, George Brunis, Johnny Dods, Wingy Joesph Manone, Albany Barney Leon Biggard, Wynton Marsalis and Freddie Keppard who had contributed and help create more of the rhythmic freedom of Jazz.

New Orleans has always been considered a melting pot of people and culture. In terms of cuisine, many chefs had a lot to work with in terms of Creole, Spanish, African and French influences. Chefs like Emeril Lagasse and John Folse benefited in their careers in the Big Easy.

Writers who came from this city have found inspiration for their literary works. Authors such as Truman Capote, Anne Rice, Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner who made their fame as writers. Also film celebrities were born in New Orleans. The celebrities include Catherine Dent, Ellen Lee DeGeneres, Harry Connick Jr, Lynn Whitfield and Reese Witherspoon.

In conclusion New Orleans has been famous for music, food, film and other key points in history that will be remembered. A great place to live, create and also visit.
